Choosing a Safe Moisturizer For Your Baby - Why a Fragrance-free Baby Oil is Best

A growing number of studies question the safety of chemicals in skin care products. Two chemicals of concern--paraben preservatives, and phthalates, found in synthetic fragrance--are used extensively in baby lotions. Both parabens and phthalates are easily absorbed through thin infant skin. A study published in the Journal of Pediatrics found measurable levels of phthalates in the urine of 81% of the infants tested. The highest levels were found in babies whose caregivers used scented shampoos and lotions to bathe and moisturize their skin.

Phthalates adversely affect the developing hormonal system. They have been linked to early puberty in girls and genital defects in boys, and recently to insulin resistance and obesity.

Parabens are endocrine disruptors--chemicals that interfere with the normal functioning of hormones that control growth and reproduction in people and animals. It is now known that parabens accumulate in fatty tissue such as breast tissue, where they have been found in breast cancer tumors.

Why are parabens and phthalates used in baby lotions?

Lotions and creams contain high percentages of water and must be preserved to prevent bacterial contamination. Parabens--methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, isoparaben, and butylparaben--are very effective at preventing growth of bacteria, fungus and molds. Discovered in the 1930s, they are still used in hundreds of products despite numerous studies linking them to health problems and cancer. Today, safer alternatives exist.

Manufacturers add synthetic fragrance to mask the smell of other ingredients in a product. Phthalates are chemical "plasticizers," used to help the fragrance blend with other lotion ingredients and help the smell last longer.

Are natural fragrances safe for infants?

Natural fragrances made from essential oils don't contain phthalates. However, long-term effects of daily essential oil use haven't been studied. There is concern that some essential oils, particularly lavender, may affect a baby's immature endocrine system. And any essential oil may cause contact sensitivity or an allergic reaction on an infant's sensitive skin.

Fragrance-free baby oil--the safest way to moisturize your baby's skin

You can avoid exposing your baby to preservatives and fragrances by using a fragrance-free, vegetable-oil-based baby oil instead of a lotion or cream. Baby oil contains no water, so it doesn't need the host of preservatives, emulsifiers and other chemicals required in a water-based product.

But it's important to read the ingredients. Drugstore baby oils are made entirely from mineral oil--distilled from petroleum as a by-product of gasoline refining--and synthetic fragrance.

Unlike mineral oil, natural vegetable oils provide important fat-soluble vitamins and fatty acids that help your baby's skin stay healthy. Look for sunflower oil or safflower oil--both high in vitamin E and considered excellent for preventing water loss in infant skin--in a baby oil's ingredient list. In several studies, sunflower oil has been shown to reduce bacterial infections in premature infants. A high-quality oil should also contain antioxidants such as vitamin C and vitamin E, to keep the oil from becoming rancid. It's a safe and effective way to keep your baby's skin soft and moisturized, without chemicals.

Buying Organic Baby Clothes

The demand for organic stuff is increasing day by day, be it organic vegetables, meat, medicines, or clothes. A large number of parents prefer organic clothes for their babies for various reasons. One important factor is to prevent any sort of allergies as some babies can be very sensitive when it comes to polyester or unnatural fibers.

The question is how to differentiate between organic and inorganic clothing line for babies. This article features some handy tips that you can benefit from.  When you shop for nice little clothes for your baby, read the label first. The label should say something like 100% certified organic cut. Make sure the label explicitly mentions it being all organic cut, and not being blended with any synthetic fiber like polyester. Remember there is no such thing as "organic polyester"- it is just a made-up term that some manufacturers use to deceive the customers.

You should also be careful about getting misled with marketing terms that are written on the baby shirts or sweaters that say organic baby, or natural baby, etc., because this, in no way, guarantees about the fabric being organic. Always go for the label and read what it says instead of believing what the shirt says.

For baby clothes that have screens and pictures on the front, make sure the drawings are made with water-based inks and not with any chemical substance. The fabric should be softer and thicker. The white organic fabrics have a yellowy tinge that you can easily notice. If they are bright white it means they have been bleached with chlorine, and you should avoid such clothes. Clothes made of organic cotton also come in different colors. Fabrics can also be dyed with plant-based dyes.

Make sure you know what your baby is wearing. Organic or inorganic, baby clothes should make your baby feel comfortable, without causing any sort of allergy.

Top Tips for Weaning Your Baby

Weaning can be one of the most exciting times for a Mum, and of course for baby too! New tastes, new sensations and new expressions... you will begin to appreciate the saying, "Variety is the spice of life!"
However it can be a little stressful, and there is no doubt that if you want your baby to have the best possible and most nutritious start in life - you DO have to be organised. SO...

My Top Tips

1 - Think a day ahead!

2 - Keep a diary - this is vital to monitor food reactions, baby's mood which may be linked to upsets in blood sugar levels, and of course it will be something to refer to years down the line or for when number 2 comes along!

3 - Introduce ONE food at a time. This is important to note down any unusual reactions (especially if there are signs of allergy or a history of allergy in the family).

4 - When you are introducing any new food to your baby, leave 3 days before starting any new foods. Signs of an allergic reaction include sneezing, runny nose, diarrhoea, vomiting, a rash, or ear infection.

5 - Rotate foods from day to day as much as possible.

6 - Be patient - mealtimes shouldn't be rushed. Your baby will decide when he-she is full.

7 - Persevere with a food, if at first your baby doesn't seem to like it. Try it again the next day, or in a few days or weeks.

8 - Try not to worry too much during the weaning process!

9 - When you are "out and about" the best foods to carry with you are bananas and ripe avocados. Both can be mashed together easily and will be tasty, nutritious and satisfying for your baby!

10 - If your baby gets a little constipated when you first introduce solids... don't panic. It may take a while for the bowels to "wake-up" to solid food. Try giving kiwi fruit!

When a baby reaches the age of 6 months (usually having doubled his or her birth weight), the energy (calorie) requirements as well as the requirements for nutrients such as protein, iron (see below), selenium, zinc, vitamin A and D, & essential fatty acids, exceeds that which can be supplied by mother's breast milk. Breast or quality follow-on milk should ideally be carried on until the age of one at least. DO NOT give cow's milk to a baby until they are AT LEAST one year old. Some believe it should be nearer to 2 years old - I would say definitely 2 if there is any history of allergy in the family.

Build up foods over the next 4 months "loosely" in the following order...

Vegetables and fruits - see note below but generally enjoy introducing a whole variety! Fruits are easy to introduce as babies love the sweetness, and of course they learn what NATURAL sweetness is. Avoid fruit juices. Fruits also mix well with veggies, but try not to rely too heavily on fruit, just because you think your baby is more likely to want something sweet! Just watch some fruits with large pips such as raspberries - kiwis should be fine. Frozen fruits and veg such as peas are fine for your baby and can be very handy to use!

Pulses and beans - well cooked and well blended - try chickpeas, white beans, and puy lentils. These mash well and combine with savoury or sweet ingredients and add bulk to satisfy.

Cooked brown rice, quinoa, millet and tapioca - homemade porridges or purees using these grains are superior to shop-bought baby rice. If you need to use baby rice, make sure you buy organic and one that is FREE of fillers, e.g. Organix.

Lamb, poultry, and fish (especially oily fish such as wild trout and sea bass which have the lowest PCB and mercury levels) - introduce in small quantities at first, concentrating on organic meats if possible. You may find after introducing meat such as lamb or chicken, your baby's mood and energy levels will soar!

At 6-9 months, iron requirements are thought to be 7-8mg/day.
To give you an idea of how to reach this, mix and match the following foods that are good sources of iron...

4 dried apricots (best soaked and mashed) - 5mg
100g cooked red lentils - 2.4mg (combine with something sweet for an interesting dish)
100g cooked peas - 2mg
* 100g cooked spinach - 1.6mg (not to give until 1 year)
100g cooked chickpeas - 1.5mg
1 tablespoon blackstrap molasses - 1.5mg
4 prunes - 1mg
100g cooked sweet potato - 1mg
150g cooked butternut squash - 1mg
½ avocado - 0.4mg
100g cooked cabbage - 0.4mg
1 tablespoon raisins - 0.4mg
100g cooked carrot - 0.4

More thoughts...

Concentrate on vegetables as much as fruits in the first few weeks if you can. Try the "sweeter" veggies such as carrot, parsnip, peas, and sweet potato, butternut squash, asparagus, cauliflower and broccoli

Shop seasonally and locally whenever you can. Don't avoid introducing a food that you don't like or didn't like as a child! Remember, with a baby - you are starting with clean palate, and NO understanding or experience of likes and dislikes. SO go ahead with Brussels sprouts, broccoli, pumpkin, leeks, swede or mushrooms - they may well surprise you! ALL these veggies are fantastically healthy in their own right!

N.B.

It is generally advisable to avoid the "deadly nightshade family" of vegetables as they contain substances that a baby may be sensitive to. These include aubergines, tomatoes, potatoes and peppers. Wait until the first year is up!

After introducing these as single foods, try these "mashed" or "pureed" combinations...

Ripe avocado and banana
Ripe avocado and mango
Sweet potato and peas
Quinoa porridge and paw paw
Quinoa and kiwi
Beetroot and peas
Broccoli and peas
Orchard fruit puree - apple, ripe pear and peach
Apple, parsnip and butternut squash
Apricot and swede - don't be afraid of combining fruit and veg - be imaginative!

Meat, fish and bean combos..
Chicken, rice or sweet potato and broccoli
Lamb, peas, sweet potato
Tuna salad - mashed and blended yellowfin tuna, avocado, natural yogurt, chopped chives and lemon juice!
Bean and root veg mash - swede, celeriac, sweet potato and organic baked beans (sweetened with apple juice)

Other foods that will form your baby's "diet"...
Suitably fortified foods - e.g Nanny Goat's milk, organic baby rice, cooked brown rice, tapioca, millet and quinoa porridge. These cereals have very low allergenic potential, as well as being excellent sources of protein and carbohydrate - see above.

* Spinach is a good source of iron (as well as calcium and vitamin A), but is best left until the baby is 1 year old.

Blue-green algae and spirulina are green "superfoods" widely available in supplement form, and are useful additions for vegan/vegetarian babies, "atopic" babies, especially those not being introduced to cereals of any sorts until the ages of 1-2 years.

(N.B 10g of dried spirulina provides nearly 3mg of iron).
For these babies, the best cereals to begin introducing are millet and quinoa, highly nutritious, gluten-free and excellent sources of protein and iron. Both can be cooked and served as porridge, with interesting additions, such as banana or papaya.

How much food should I give?

The following is a guide to the first 3 months of weaning - e.g. from 6-9 months of age.

Weeks 1 and 2 - Try 1-2 teaspoons during the lunchtime feed, halfway through the breast or bottle-feed.

Weeks 3 and 4 - As above + 1-2 teaspoons at breakfast halfway through bottle or breast feed. Increase lunchtime feed to 3-4 teaspoons.

Weeks 5 and 6 - 1-2 tsp at breakfast. Introduce 2 courses at lunchtime with 5-6 tsp, and introduce a teatime feed of 2-3 tsp.

Weeks 7 and 8 - As above + offer solids FIRST at lunchtime feed and then top-up with milk.

Weeks 9 and 10 - As above + solids only for lunch + water from a beaker - offer solids FIRST at teatime.

Weeks 11 and 12 - Solids only for lunch and tea. Give a beaker of water after lunch and tea.

"All-in-One" Or "Pocket" Babies Diapers

Arguably the greatest advance in diaper technology since disposables burst onto the market in 1951, "all-in-one" babies diapers provide disposables' convenience with the comfort and durability of cloth. Best of all, they pose no risk to the environment.

"Pockets" for Babies Diapers
Better known as "AIO's" (all in ones) or "pocket" diapers, these all-natural miracle devices combine a washable, breathable, organic outer "wrapper"-the pocket, with an all-natural liner. When baby soils her diaper, you quickly, adroitly remove the pocket, change the liner, snap or Velcro the pocket back in place and continue with your daily routine. No more fumbling with pins or juggling ingenious-but- useless diaper-pin alternatives. Because they "breathe"-like your hockey jersey and your favorite running singlet-pockets keep your baby drier, protecting her from skin irritation and rashes. Pockets quickly clean-up with regular soap and water, air-drying completely in about ten minutes. Completely machine washable and practically indestructible, pockets easily will endure many more children than you plan to deliver, becoming hand-me-downs for your children's children and six generations after them. Moms delight in pockets' fashions: Clever, style-wise manufacturers make pockets in each season's trendy colors and fabrics, and they frequently add little touches to make runway-savvy moms just melt. Most manufacturers also offer swimsuit pockets-another great breakthrough in diaper technology.

Organic Liners for Two-Layer Babies Diapers
The pockets combine fashion's allure with hard-minded, down-to-earth practicality. The liners preserve mom's peace of mind, reduce her workload, and help her control the family's budget. Liners come in many different materials, all of them equally safe, earth-friendly, and economical. You may choose organic disposables-yes you read that correctly, and, no, it is not an oxymoron; or you may choose hemp/cotton cloth diapers, by far the softest and friendliest among Mother Earth's best friends. "Disposable" liners, made of cellulose and natural fibers, contain no chlorine or volatile organic chemicals, and they break down after just 150 days in a landfill. Better still, many are flushable, breaking-up quickly and easily in the toilet and sailing effortlessly down the tubes. Many also are compostable, so that you may mix them with your yard waste and use them to nourish next spring's tender rosebuds. Cotton/hemp cloth diapers wash quickly and easily in cold water, growing softer and more absorbent with each run through the cycles; and they dry quickly on your clothesline. Hemp, the strongest natural fiber known to humankind, outperforms and outlasts more than 90% of high-test synthetic fibers. Hemp simply will not break or wear out, and it grows abundantly, gently, doing more to replenish than to exhaust fertile soil.

Your Baby, Month 2

As the baby enters the second month of development, he or she may begin to express feelings through cooing, gurgling, squealing, laughing, grunting, or humming. The baby might even flash his or her first smile by the time he or she reaches five weeks old.

The baby will begin to spend more time awake during the day. This is the perfect time to start stimulating sensory development. Music is a great way to engage the infant. Any type of music will do, although many parents prefer classical tunes or lullabies. When the baby is quiet and alert, parents can interact by talking to their infant about the things around them, such as pictures on the wall.

For some parents, the second month of the baby's development can mean mixed emotions. Some new parents might feel disappointed that life with their newborn is not how they had imagined it to be. These feelings are perfectly normal and nothing to be ashamed of. Many new mothers also have a lack of desire for sex due to hormone fluctuations; this too is normal. Other mothers who choose not to breastfeed may feel guilt and shame over their decision.

During the second month, mothers will also return to their doctors for a postpartum checkup. This visit will include a pelvic exam as well as a breast exam. Some women will also receive a Pap smear at this time. It is important to make sure that the mother's body is healing properly so that she can continue her job as a new mother.

Oral Thrush in Newborns - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Oral thrush is an infection caused by the yeast fungus known as Candida albicans and is a common illness in newborn babies. The fungus is also referred to as candidosis and moniliasis, but generally these terms describe the appearance of candida albicans in adults. This article will focus on the causes and symptoms of oral thrush in newborns as well as methods of treatment.

It may be helpful to first understand some background information on exactly what oral thrush is. Microorganisms exist everywhere in our environment and usually bacteria, viruses and fungi form a symbiotic relationship with the human body. These microorganisms are beneficial to the health of babies and adults alike and the body allows them to remain present. The fungus that causes oral thrush does not have a symbiotic relationship with the human body. Candida albicans usually works its way into the body when the immune system is in a diseased or weakened state. In their first few days of life, newborn babies are especially at risk from infections such as oral thrush.

Two specific causes of oral thrush are a reaction to antibiotics and transmission from a mother with a yeast infection. The mouth of a postnatal baby undergoes certain changes following a dose of antibiotic medication that create a breeding ground for a fungus to develop. It is also possible for a mother to pass on a yeast infection to her child in the form of candidosis. The transmission occurs from exposure in the birth canal and oftentimes results in infection when the baby is from two to ten weeks old.

Diagnosing babies is usually done using the clinical picture. This means that doctors are generally able to diagnose the infection on sight alone. Oral thrush manifests itself in the form of painful white lesions on the inside of the baby's mouth. These patches appear on the gums, insides of cheeks, palates and tongue. It is also possible for thrush lesions to work their way into the esophagus. Doctors use throat cultures, endoscopic examination and barium swallow to help diagnose an oral thrush infection that has progressed to this degree.

Nipple damage due to breastfeeding can lead to an elevated risk of Candida infection. Although the nipples and areola may not show signs of an infection certain symptoms can help indicate that one is occurring. One or both nipples may be experience stinging pain or itching. Visible signs that a mother has a Candida infection include nipples with white dots, a skin rash with small fluid filled blisters, swelling and cracking of the skin.

If a doctor has reason to believe that an infant has oral thrush, he or she may send a cell sample from the baby's tongue to a lab for analysis and confirmation. The use of a lab sample can help ensure that there are no other illnesses causing complicating a thrush infection.

When oral thrush or a yeast infection has been diagnosed, both the mother and her baby should be treated simultaneously. Coordinating care for both the mother and child helps avoid the risk of the infection being passed back and forth.

Medications for yeast can be systemic (internal) or topical (external). Often physicians will begin curing a yeast infection with a topical drug, followed by a more powerful systemic if necessary. Fluconazole is antifungal cream used to treat a mother's breasts that have come into contact with a baby experiencing oral thrush. Some examples of commercially available anti-fungal drugs include Nystatin, Lotrimin and Itraconazola. Oral thrush is often treated with Nystatin by application to the inside of the infant's mouth several times daily. For complete treatment information speak with your pediatrician.

By paying close attention to the warning signs and symptoms of an oral thrush infection, mothers can reduce the complications caused by this illness. As with all concerns related to the health of your newborn, always rely on the suggestions and information provided by your pediatrician. With treatment time and concern you and your child can overcome the challenge of an oral thrush infection.

7 Reasons Why You Should Choose Organic Baby Blankets

In a world choked with deadly toxins, pollutants, allergens and chemicals, how comforting and reassuring is it to introduce your newborn to the world with an organic baby blanket?

It seems like a tribute to our human survival instincts that a newborn baby who has been nurtured and closeted in the warmth of its mother's embryo can survive and prosper in the harsh realities of the real world.

The next best thing you can do to emulate the environment where she developed and grew into a full-term baby is to provide her with safe, soft and sterile baby clothes and in particular, baby blankets.

The benefits of an organic baby blanket are:

* By definition, organic products are produced or grown in a pesticide and herbicide free environment so none of the toxins are able to leach into the material.

* O.B blankets are made from natural fabrics like cotton, flannel, wool or more recently, bamboo, with no synthetic fibres.

* O.B clothing is naturally soft and smooth against baby's skin and contains no irritants, chemicals or allergens that have been known to cause breathing difficulties and respiratory inspections in some newborns.

* Natural dyes without harsh chemicals are used to colour the blankets, which further protects the very gentle skin of babies.

* The natural qualities of the materials used in baby blankets means they can breathe, so effective air flow is produced. This acts as a natural warming/cooling system.

* Natural fabrics like cotton, flannel and wool are absorbent, so they are able to effectively soak up any wetness without leaving baby cold and damp.

* Organic fabrics don't produce fluff, clothing 'dust' or other irritants that can harm baby's ability to breathe. In fact, statistics suggest that the incidence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is reduced in babies who have organic bedding.

While organic baby blankets and bedding may cost more than standard baby bedding, it is only natural; growing and producing organic cotton is a labour intensive process as is raising sheep to produce organic wool. And the manufacturing techniques that yield the intensely soft bamboo fabric from the bamboo plant requires an equally intensive process.

But, in the long run, isn't your precious little bundle worth the extra expense when you know that he or she is swaddled in the beautifully soft, all natural, toxin free organic baby blankets that are available on the market today?

How Are Organic Baby Skin Care Products Different?

Everyone has their own ideas about what is best for their baby which is one of the reasons the new organic trend is now being seen with baby skin care products. A growing number of individuals believe natural products are vital for a healthy happy baby and that natural is the only way to go. There are definite benefits to using natural or organic products which are made from ingredients that come straight from the earth including plants and oils. No chemicals are used and the products are prepared and preserved with altering the natural integrity of the ingredients.

Plants have for years been used by naturalists as well as mainstream medicine for their beneficial properties. Each plant produces oil that can be extracted and used to improve our bodies and minds. A few of the ingredients found in organic are as follows:

1. Chamomile is known to be a natural anti-allergen, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic therefore it is effective for healing and soothing the skin. Certain varieties are also known to have a calming effect.

2. Lavender is world renowned for its healing properties, in particular its ability to promote cell regeneration. It is also a powerful antiseptic, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. Lavender when inhaled is also known to calm and promote restful sleeps.

3. Calendula, know to most as the marigold is a potent anti-bacterial, anti-viral and an anti-inflammatory, it is very efficient in treatment of cuts, abrasions and diaper rashes.

4. Jojoba which is said to be very similar to the skin's naturally produced sebum is an excellent lubricant, moisturizer, and skin protectant.

5. Aloe Vera is widely recognized for its healing properties because of its ability to accelerate cell growth and pain relieving properties. Aloe Vera is also absorbed by the skin four times faster than water so it is beneficial as a carrier ingredient.

A baby's skin is very delicate which makes organic skin care products a desirable choice for many because they do not contain chemicals and therefore a skin reaction is less likely. Mainstream products use surfactants to essentially produce the foaming action however surfactants are also proven to be skin irritants. Skin reactions can cause a burning, itching, or rash and can also progress into a skin infection if an irritant is used over a prolonged period. If you suspect this is the case see your Doctor or health nurse for assistance.

The variety and selection of organic skin care products has exploded in recent years. A few of these products include shampoo, lotion, soaps and body wash, diaper rash treatment, laundry detergent, and teething medication. Ultimately any product that touches your baby's skin can be found in the organic baby skin care section.

Not everyone will buy organic skin care products for there newborn this is all a personal choice. The main goal however remains the same and that is to purchasing skin care products which are free of harsh ingredients including perfumes and alcohols. Always seek out the blandest and gentlest products that you can find because their skin is five times as thin and the harsh chemicals found in products aimed at adults can cause severe irritation.

Organic Baby Gifts For the Green Baby

It used to be that organic was only about food. Now there are organic cotton baby clothes and beddings, and organic toys and furniture. For parents who are concerned about the environment and are choosy about the things they will use for the baby, receiving organic baby gifts will be very much appreciated.

Organic items are soft and gentle on baby's sensitive skin. They are all natural and free from synthetic materials that could harm the baby or the environment. They are especially recommended for premature babies who tend to have very sensitive skin. Organic products contain no chemicals that can harm babies' health. Choose products that are 100% Certified Organic. They are made from materials grown without harmful pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Baby clothes and accessories like blankets, diapers and towels can be made from organic cotton or organic bamboo fabric. These materials are very soft and comfortable. They wick moisture away from the skin, keeping baby drier. When you give an organic baby gift set containing sleeping suits, baby blanket, shirts, hat and booties for a baby, you know you are giving something unique and special.

Babies automatically put things in their mouths. This is another reason why you should consider giving something safe and chemical-free for babies. Besides, organic baby gifts are no longer very expensive or hard to find. They are readily available online or at local stores and you can order organic gift baskets for the eco-friendly family.

Baby clothes, shoes, blankets and toys made of organic materials are sold in shops specializing in organic baby products. You can even purchase an organic baby gift basket containing baby bath towels, wash cloths, toys and soap made from certified organic ingredients. If you are a do-it-yourself person, you can put together an assortment of organic baby clothes and accessories including organic bath soap and shampoo. Wrap everything inside an organic baby bath towel or blanket and tie it with a pretty raffia ribbon. Mommy will be thrilled to receive this unique gift for her baby.

With our growing awareness about health and the environment, parents are concerned about the safety of their precious darlings. Organic baby gift products that are free from harmful chemicals and harsh bleaches are favored by discriminating parents. When you give baby clothes, stuffed toys, natural wooden toys, blankets, etc. made from organic materials, you are showing the parents that you care for their baby as much as they do.

Farm Business Ideas - Making Organic Baby Food

I've met many people throughout the years who want to be more involved in the products they sell. They want the process to begin and end with them. One great option is looking into different farm business ideas. You don't need a huge plot of land to start many of them. One great example is making organic baby food.

All you need to start is a small garden. You'll then grow foods that can be made into baby foods. Some ideas might be carrots, peas or other vegetables. Seeds can typically be bought very cheaply and will last you a long time. You'll then plant your products and be sure to tend to them properly. There are many free tutorials online that will teach everything you need to know about organic farming.

Once your vegetables are ready for harvest, you will simply pick them and get started on your baby food making. Most organic baby food has no additives. So all you'll have to do is clean and cut your vegetables and then put them into a blender and whir your way to financial success.

The best idea is to package your food in cute jars with individual labels. You'll want to come up with a cute slogan or logo that will set your food apart from the rest. You can then sell the jars individually at farmer's markets or you can sell your entire stock to a local organic grocery store.

Farm business ideas that focus on taking advantage of the organic book are a great way to make your own products and a great living at the same time.

Organic Baby Diapers and Organic Baby Products

There are varieties in organic baby diapers.

1) Pre folded Organic Cloth Diapers

2) Fitted Organic Cloth Diapers

Cloth diapers have been considered extremely tiresome to use as well as exasperating to clean or wash. Gone are the days of these misconceptions! Organic cloth diapers of today are better for baby's skin care compared to disposable diapers. Cloth diapers nowadays also come in varied types and designs to accommodate the various needs of parents and their preferences.

Pre-folded Organic Cloth Diapers

These are like olden type in which pins have to be used to fit each end. But they are the cheapest kind of diapers. They are usually in square shape and there will be an instruction manual to show how to use the diapers.

Fitted Organic Cloth Diapers

These types of organic cloth diapers are the most common cotton diapers and they are also quite convenient and can be compared to disposables. They usually come in sizes that range from preemies to larger sizes. They often have snaps, Velcro or any other type of attachment that can be used. They are cut and sewn to fit the bottom of babies and around the legs as well.

Advantages

Organic cloth diapers are now as convenient to use as disposable diapers. The cleaning and washing of the cloth diapers may present itself as a larger work load but the help that you give the environment by not disposing of plastic diapers is a good enough reason that can outweigh the extra work of cleaning the cloth diapers.

Organic cloth diapers are also more breathable than the disposable ones therefore promoting better air circulation and less chances of any skin condition of developing. Although, organic cloth diapers are quite absorbent, once baby wets them, they will usually need changing, which is a good thing because the urine and feces will not stay in contact with baby's skin for more than necessary.

Organic Baby Products

As babies are sensitive and they need lot of care for their immune system development a number of organic products are being introduced into the market.

Organic Baby Clothing

Many organic baby products are clothing and other fabrics such as bibs, diapers etc. The cotton used for organic baby clothing is grown, harvested and processed in such a ways that fits the organic requirements. These organic baby products are quite necessary since clothing is worn everyday and is in contact with your skin.

Organic Baby Skin Care

Organic baby products for baby's skin care are also necessary especially for infants. There are many skin care products that are made organically such as soaps, shampoos, lotions, sponges etc. These organic baby products come in many varieties and are usually fragrance free and also color free. If there are some with fragrance, the fragrance should state that it comes from essential oils and not from chemical based fragrances. Color or dyes used to color organic baby products must also be from botanicals and must not contain any toxic elements.

Organic Bedding

There is also organic bedding that babies can benefit from. In fact, using organic baby products such as beddings is a great idea because babies spend a lot of their time in their cribs. These organic baby products must also be free from allergens and must have not passed through chemical bleaching to be safe for babies to use. Even the cribs and play pens can be from organic materials (naturally bleached wood) and painted or coated with non-toxic paint and varnish.

So use organic and keep your baby and our world healthier and greener!

Tips For Buying Organic Baby Clothes

If you want to dress your baby in clothing made without pesticides and toxic fabric finishes, organic baby clothes are a smart choice. Certified organic cotton baby clothing is also free of flame retardants, heavy metals and petrochemicals and other toxins that could be harmful to a developing baby. Whether you are shopping for a new baby or making over your baby's wardrobe, here are some tips to help you navigate through the world of organic baby clothing.

With the growing popularity of organic baby clothes, you can find it almost anywhere you look. If you like to shop online there are plenty of boutiques that specialize in organic baby clothing. As you decide which brands you like, you can also buy directly from the manufacturer. While you may not save money shopping direct, you will be able to choose from more of your favorite brand's product offerings.

You can also buy from smaller online shop owners on websites such as Etsy or Ebay. However find a store owner with good ratings and credibility and inspect the product carefully once you receive it. Organic baby clothes are also available at many of the large chain retail stores such as Babies "R" Us and Pottery Barn.

There is no denying that organic baby clothing costs more than conventional clothing, but if you shop smart, you can dress your baby in organic cotton or other natural fibers for reasonable prices. Coupons, sales and comparison shopping are just a few methods. Furthermore, if you are easing your way into organic clothing, you can start with the pieces that will be closest to your baby's skin and worn most often. You can't go wrong with body suits, t-shirts and leggings. They can be worn alone or layered under other outfits. For this same reason you may want to go with solid colors that can be mixed and matched for variety.

One thing you don't have to compromise with organic baby clothing is style. You can find organic baby clothes in traditional nursery patterns or minimalist solids. Options range from brights to neutrals and from hippy-chic to classic. So have fun expressing you and your baby's personal style through organic clothing.

Wherever you shop and whatever your price point, be sure to read the labels and inspect the fabric. You don't want to be fooled by marketing buzz words like "all natural" or even "organic." An article of organic baby clothing will be labeled as 100% organic and not blended with synthetic fabrics.

Organic Clothing For Your Baby

The skin of a baby is much more sensitive and vulnerable to harmful environmental contaminants compared to an adult. Baby skin is up to five times thinner and less oily, thus, making it more porous. It also produces less melanin, which helps protect the toddler against sunburn. A baby's metabolism is also higher than an adult but the baby's weight is lower; thus, making the baby very susceptible to absorbing toxins and dirt. In addition, a baby sweats less efficiently than an adult, so it is more difficult for her to regulate body temperature.

Most of the clothes being sold commercially are made from materials that can be harmful to a baby's sensitive skin. Clothes made of polyester, acrylic, fleece, and nylon frequently cause skin irritation. These clothing materials are often derived directly or indirectly from petroleum or natural gas, making them dangerous to a baby's health because they tend to constantly emit gas. Benzene, ammonia, and ethylene glycol are also found in the finishes of such fabrics. And no matter how often you wash the clothes, there is no guarantee that these chemicals will be washed off. That is why most parents choose clothes made from cotton because they are lightweight and breathable.

However, clothes made of traditional cotton may also harm a baby's sensitive skin. Traditional cotton is grown with the use of pesticides, artificial fertilizers, and herbicides. In fact, it has been reported that most used pesticides used on cotton have been labeled as known carcinogens by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Then, during the process of converting raw cotton into cloth, more chemicals are added. Chlorine bleaches, silicone-based softeners, dyes, and silicon waxes are also added to the finishing to create soft, odor resistant, and mothproof clothing. These chemicals can cause burning eyes, throat, and nose. They can also increase vulnerability to cancer; as well as, cause sleeping difficulties. Fortunately, usage of organic cotton has increased extensively.

Organic cotton is grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides, or artificial fertilizers. It is grown through safer methods such as crop rotation and manual weeding. Organic clothing protects a baby from dusts, thus, preventing her from acquiring allergies and ailments such as asthma. This is because organic clothing does not contain harmful substances that are found in the traditional cotton clothing. Organic clothes are also soft, breathable, and delicate to the skin; plus they are stronger and more durable compared to traditionally-grown cotton clothing.

What Do Organic Baby Skin Care Products Consist of ?

When you begin researching skin care products for your infant, you could discover that a few products are listed "natural", but do not call themselves organic, but at the same time others list themselves as organic. You might be in mystery about the difference, and what makes something truly "organic".

Being organic means more than only containing natural ingredients. Although there are no governmental guidelines for what makes up an organic baby skin care product, there are guidelines for organic food, and those same guidelines can be applied to any product that claims to be organic.

Any naturally grown product or ingredient must be produced without any chemicals, which includes any fertilizer or pesticides. Natural pesticides and fertilizers may be used, however no toxic chemicals are used on the plants at all, at any time. Organic skin care products, both for infants as well as grownups, must contain no chemicals, meaning artificial dyes, colors and preservatives.

Some products tout their "natural" ingredients elements, but when you study the ingredients you find a lengthy list of chemicals used in addition to natural coloring, scent or other ingredients. The most common chemical ingredients are coloring, scent, and SLS, or sodium lauryl sulfate, a detergent that could cause eye problems, difficulty breathing, as well as skin problems.

Organic products do not contain any kind of chemical, and any product that contains chemicals, despite how natural it says it is, is not organic and can harm your infant. If you see any words in the components that you do not understand and which have chemical-sounding names, like words ending in -yl or any name with a number in it, you're likely not looking at an organic product.
Why are organic skin care products so important for your infant? Infants have extremely soft, delicate skin. It's also extremely sensitive, the same as their newly developing lungs, their eyes, and everything else about them. Small children can be very sensitive to all chemicals, because they haven't been left vulnerable to them previously and their systems are left open to reactions to chemicals.

When you make the choice to purchase only organic skin care products in caring for your child, you permit your little one to grow into the world without being assaulted at an early age by chemical preservatives, fragrances, and colorings designed to make his skin care products look and smell better. No baby yet has ever complained that her shampoo didn't smell sweet enough. But quite a few have developed rashes or had their eyes become red when chemical-laden shampoo or soap got in their eyes.

All-natural Slip on Pant By Baby Soy (Chocoalte, 0-3)

All-natural Slip on Pant By Baby Soy (Chocoalte, 0-3) Review

I have a lot, and I do mean a LOT of clothes for my twin girls, and these are my hands-down favorite pants. My only complaint is that they don't make them in larger/toddler sizes, because my girls will soon outgrow these & it makes me very sad. Nothing else I've found is as soft, as comfortable, as easy a fit as these pants. They wash and wear incredibly well, and are soft and forgiving for different body types. My tall, thin 98th %ile for height twin can still wear the 12 month size, even though she is in 18-24 month for everything else (they are just above her ankles, but look like capris so this is not an issue for me). My tall, chubby 98th %ile for height twin can also squeeze into the 12 month pants even though she is in 4T for all other pants (although comfortable for her, they do look snug). They also fit my girls when they were much smaller. As I said, the fit is very forgiving in either direction. Miracle pants! Please make them in larger sizes!

I have other Baby Soy clothing, which are nice, but these slip-on pants are by far my favorite.

All-natural Slip on Pant By Baby Soy (Chocoalte, 0-3) Feature

  • All-natural baby clothes
  • color co-ordinated for easy mixing and matching
  • Machine wash, tumble dry.
  • Will not shrink or fade
  • 50% soybean fiber, 50% cotton

All-natural Slip on Pant By Baby Soy (Chocoalte, 0-3) Overview

Noted for its soft fabrics and a chic, stylish design, you can match this slip-on pant with any of the Baby Soy Signature line for the perfect coordinated outfit. Did you know that soybean fiber is feels like cashmere for a third of the price; it's soft, smooth and ultra-light?

A Healthy Baby With Organic Baby Food

Every parents wanted to impart in their child a good nutritional habits. It needs to start early and some parents are beginning to help their babies learn to love healthier foods by feeding them organic baby food. Even though, this may seem like a passing rage to some parents, but many believed they are laying the foundation for a lifetime of good eating.

Most of us, has discovered the nutritional and health benefits associated with eating foods that are grown organically. The items that are used in the organic baby food are grown in a specific ways as to ensure that no chemicals or preservatives of any kind come in contact with the food. These food is said to be healthier and more and more people are trying it each day.

Parents who really want to avoid their kids take up chemicals, organic baby food is an essential to them. The great thing about these products is that they are reasonably priced and readily available in your regular everyday supermarket. This is a great convenience for parents who want to feed their babies organic baby food instead of the regular fair.

Healthy organic baby food is really a great choice to parents who wants to make certain that they know exactly what is good for their baby. Food that is grown in an organic environment can consist of everything from fruit to meat to nuts. However, it's a bit more costly than the standard food that we've all been eating for years.

Most parent seems to decide with either purchasing pre-packaged foods or they may decide to make their own. For parents who are juggling a new baby as well as a career, the already made organic baby food is usually more appealing. It comes in the same containers as the traditional baby food that we've all grown accustomed to seeing on store shelves. With many grocery chains now selling organic items including baby food, a parent can usually find it next to the other baby food items.

Before, I was raised on normal, old fashioned, run of the mill Gerber baby food. Back then, organic baby food did not exist. There certainly was not organic baby clothing like there is today. So when my wife decided that we would feed the kid organic baby foods, I was not pleased. Why spend the extra money? Our budget was pretty tight as it was, and getting baby organic food did not seem that important to me. After all, why would it be any different for my baby? I was in great physical health and I had been raised on conventionally grown foods.

We argued on this for a while, but eventually I gave in. It seems like my wife might have something to her arguments. You see that, there's a lot of different things than when i was a kid. Back then, although we had pesticides and artificial fertilizers, we certainly did not have genetically modified foods. Research has shown that pollen from genetically modified food is much more likely to cause food sensitivities and food allergies. This could be a big problem, persistent for a child's whole life. Organic baby food is really the only way to protect against these kinds of health problems.

As a reminder to parents who wants to feed their infant homemade food, they need a few supplies such as a well stocked pantry. You need to purchase fresh organic baby food if you want to make organic baby food by yourself. Many parents find it easiest to prepare all the organic baby food they'll need for the week in one afternoon. Others prefer to cook meals for the entire family and then blend up some of that to make the baby food.

Whether or not, it is because of the organic baby food, our baby is quite healthy. Teaching them to eat organic food, avoid sweets and junk food, and exercise daily will make them grow up healthy. Of course, it is still too early for a lot of that. After all, he or she is only a baby! Nonetheless, when a couple years have passed and we have used up the last of the organic baby food, we hope he or she will still be as strong, happy, and healthy as he or she is today.

Steps to Create an Organic Baby Nursery

Unless a mother knows what is causing the problem or knows what symptoms to look for, the baby will continue to be exposed to these harmful elements. Thankfully, there are ways to avoid or correct these problems through non-toxic approaches. Here are a few simple steps:

The Right Paint

Mothers first expose their unborn babies to chemical fumes when painting and breathing in the toxic fumes. The baby is then exposed to the same chemical fumes after birth. Babies who are affected may experience central nervous system irritation resulting in increased agitation, tension and decreased feeding.

Paints and finishes release low levels of toxic gases into the air for years after application. But with the development of non-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) paints, we are now able to buy toxic-free paint. Just ask for it at your local paint store.

The Right Carpet

As inviting and soft to the touch as carpet may be, it is a reservoir of mold, mildew and dust mites. When I was growing up, we had shag carpet in all of our rooms, including our bedrooms, because it was the latest fad. Underneath lay beautiful hardwood floors. We were cultivating a nice collection of who knows what.

As a first step in improving your nursery, remove any old carpet. Avoid replacing with new carpet as it contains harmful chemicals releasing toxic fumes into the air. If possible replace with hardwood flooring if it doesn't already exist. If carpet is a must, choose completely untreated carpeting with natural latex or jute backing.

The Right Furniture

When furnishing your baby's nursery, consider solid wood furniture. Formaldehyde in the glues used during manufacturing continually out gas for the entire life of the piece.

Most Amish furniture is made from solid wood and very Eco-friendly. Also, try to avoid new plastic changing tables or other plastic furniture as they also release toxic fumes for many years.

The Right Mattress & Bedding

When shopping for a mattress, consider a natural organic baby mattress. Most of the traditional crib mattresses are laden with toxic chemicals that are used during production and in the flame retardants that are sprayed on the surface. The baby is then exposed to these deadly fumes for hours on end as most of their time is spent in the crib. These toxic fumes have also been linked to SIDS related deaths. SIDS prevention is a top priority.

Also, in a study conducted by Anderson Laboratories, six different brands of waterproof crib mattress covers were found to emit toxic fumes. One was made of polyolefin and the other five were made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and covered with polyester or cotton.

If you must use a non organic baby mattress, at least consider using an organic mattress cover or organic puddle pad. Though this is not a 100% solution, you are providing some barrier between your baby and the mattress.

We cannot emphasize enough the importance of a safe and toxic-free nursery for your baby. Babies deserve a healthy & happy start in life. We hope you will take these few simple steps in providing your baby with a safe and healthy environment. You and your baby will sleep better!

Organic Baby Food - A Healthy Choice

As parents, there's nothing we wouldn't do for our children. And when it comes to our newborn baby we are constantly seeking those things that will give our child the greatest health advantage possible. It is not surprising, however, that there is a growing trend towards organic baby food and the myriad of benefits it can offer to its smallest consumers.

Organic food continues to grow in popularity as more and more people understand the benefits of eating food that is free of pesticides and chemicals. Organic farmers - within strictly enforced government guidelines - grow produce without the use of chemicals often used in traditional farming. They are committed to producing fruits and vegetables that are not in any way chemically altered. Organic agricultural farmers - that produce meat and dairy products - feed their animals only organic products; no supplements or chemicals of any kind are given to livestock or dairy cows.

If adults are receiving such tremendous benefits from organic food then it stands to reason that organic baby food could be just as healthy for infants. When babies reach the point that they can be introduced to solid foods, pediatricians advise that each food should be introduced one at a time to keep a careful eye for any food allergies. Organic baby food, because of its natural state - free of all harmful chemicals - provides another level of protection against allergies.

Further, because organic baby food is chemical free it is the safest thing for our environment. Subsequently, giving our children organic baby food ensures their health and the health of the planet on which they live.

Finding organic baby food can be as simple as visiting the nearest grocery store or health food store, depending on where you live. For those who have limited access to organic food, there are home delivery services that will bring the requested organic baby food straight to your door; a comprehensive list of such services can be found online.

Organic baby food shows your commitment to your children and the environment. Making small changes can go a long way to ensuring a lifetime of good health.
